Do You Want to Write For us?

( 2 Votes )

These are the main categories of articles we would like to publish - Game Mechanics - Trade and Marketing Mechanics - Fiction - Development.

None of these are strictly defined and there will be a crossover between categories - as an example, Fiction should really keep true to the actual Game Mechanics. So whilst being an entertaining story it also has to be plausible within the world of EVE.

Each category can be further split, so for example Game Mechanics would break down into PVE, PVP, Missioning etc. Similarly Trade and Marketing could break down to Investments, Scams, etc. Fiction can encompass each and every aspect of EVE. Development can be further broken into tools, OOG applications, IGB applications, EVE API applications etc.

We are looking to 'recruit' a core of writers who could provide material on a regular basis - perhaps every month. Each author has their own abilities at writing, plus their RL commitments etc so there is no pressure to submit but we would rather it wasn't just a one of article with no follow up - especially if the first one was really good and readers were looking for more...

Beside article and guide writers we are looking for 'correspondents'. Kind of like 'News from the Front' wherever your 'front' happens to be. So it could be entertaining local chat or pirate activities in the systems you frequent on your travels.. We understand there is a certain amount of 'cussing' goes on in chat and in fictional articles there would be elements of this as well. However we would prefer if cuss words were kept to a minimum and of a mild nature.

Finances are an issue and we are concerned that we can't pay good authors a reasonable fee. Our initial assumption is that many will be happy with a 'token' payment directly from us and we would hope to supplement this by encouraging readers to 'donate' ISK to authors whose work they enjoyed. We will put a prominent 'reminder' to readers so its important you use a real EVE alt as your name against the article to ensure donations reach you. Payments to authors are delayed by a week to ensure there are no copyright complaints about any article we publish. When the week expires with no complaints then we pay up!

We will also suggest readers donate to a 'pool' which we would split between all active authors and we would take a percentage to try and recruit more authors and up the fee's. This is an alternative donation and we wouldn't expect readers to donate to both the pool and the author directly.

Initially our fee to authors would be 20Million ISK per 1500 words which we understand can only be described as a 'token' payment and that's being generous :)

We would almost certainly make editorial changes such as formatting for the site, breaking long paragraphs into readable chunks, correcting obvious spelling errors etc. This does not mean we change the substance of any article and any changes would be sent back to you for revision and your agreement prior to publishing. This may be a link to a page on our website where you can see how the article will appear but the page will only be viewable by you.

All published articles, guides etc would be credited to the original author but we would retain copyright for use on our site. We would expect that the article had not been published elsewhere but if it had we need to ensure we have your permission and that you are not breaking any agreement with another publisher. Similarly we would expect that you did not submit the article to another site and that you let us have sole publishing rights - unless of course someone is prepared to pay you a couple of Billion ISK :)

If you decide you want to publish your article or guide or the Eve Online forums AND publish with us we will be happy to accommodate this idea. We would not pay you as you would more than likely be receiving donations via the forums but we would suggest to our readers that they donate to you. We understand you wish to see your work reach a wide audience and we are happy to help you. All we would ask is that you include a link in the forums to this website with a link such as 'This article can also be viewed on Solar Sentinel at XXXXXX'' or something similar ...

Any artwork you use should preferably be your own original work - perhaps screenshots. However, if you do use images from other sources such as EVE Online for example you MUST inform us so we can credit the image to the correct source. We don't want to run into hassles from disgruntled artist's or other websites. If you have no images to use we may insert images relevant to the piece and will credit their source.

As a registered user of this site you can submit an article online via the USER MENU - this is only visible once you have registered and logged in. To activate this function you need to contact us to modify your permissions to that of 'Author' - this will protect us to some extent from jerks trying to upload junk or something nastier! There is a simple editor where you can copy in the text of your article and you can upload images and position them within the article body. The article will then be reviewed before publishing and you will be notified. This is really only suitable for fairly short articles and the editor is very simple with few formatting tools.

To submit a more expansive article is better done by email and I would ask you to contact us with the following email subject and body and the article file (in MS Word if possible or .RTF format otherwise) attached in a zip format:

Send to admin@solar-sentinel.co.uk

Email Subject - Article submission - Number of Article - Article Revision
(over time you may submit many articles and it'll help if you number each one sent and its revision)
e.g. Article submission - Article #1 - Rev. A or Article Update - Article #1 - Rev. B

Email Body:
Authors Name - real Alt name
Article Title - a suitable title for the piece
Artlce Category - category where you think it should be published
Article Word length - article words - note: we will not include lists of technical specifications in this count
Notes: anything you feel relevant to the article
Image sources if used - this is important
Copyright consent - your specific agreement to our publishing rights and waiving of any other commitments to other publishers
This need only be a statement such as:
I (REAL NAME), agree to Www.Solar-Sentinel.co.uk having sole publishing rights to the accompanying article and that I will not submit the said article to any other publisher without the consent of the management of Www.solar-sentinel.co.uk. I also verify that this article has not been published elsewhere or if it has I verify that there are no standing commitments to any other publisher and that I have the right to use or publish the article wherever I please. I also verify that all content within the article, including accompanying images are my own original work or that sources of copied images/text are credited where applicable. The website management at Www.solar-sentinel.co.uk can not be held responsible for any copyright infringement caused by publication of the article I have submitted.

I hope this has been of interest and not too long winded. - especially the bit of 'legalise' at the end which unfortunately we have to do to protect ourselves.

Please think about our requirements and if you feel there is something you can contribute we will be delighted to read any submission you provide.
